Steve Almond says:
"Literary is supposed to make people feel alive, in the deepest ways comic, tragic, whatever not self-conscious." wordriot.org/interview/almond_2003.html What is your take? |

I think the best thing I can hope for out of my stories is that they entertain the reader during the read, and then make them reflect inward a few days later. I don't want to make someone feel self consious, to me that sounds too much like preaching. I can write 10000 words that basically amount to "You know, I kind of think <insert controversial view here> and hopefully at somepoint the reader thinks "I kind of think he was on to something" or "I totally disagree with that guy because....". I might not get you to change a view, but if i can get you to realize that your views are based on your own logical thoughts, and not something you were forcefed mindlessly by someone else, then I'm happy. Thats what writing is about for me, allowing myself to subject my own thoughts and views to simulated experience.

thanks, i appreciate it. in addition to the body shop, i have a story published at thewomenscafe.com, and i am constantly experimenting with different styles of fiction in several short story forums around the web. You can sometimes find me in the uncut forum at www.short-stories.co.uk/ as well. Feel free to email me and I can add you to my list of readers who get copies of my stories as I update them.
