I think we all have the capacity to understand, but that doesn't mean we're able to appreciate someone else's situation such as a parent's when we're a child. I think we have to experience something to truly appreciate that experience.

That's a good line, TG. Readers can all relate to that, and to children that can't appreciate (or understand) being a parent.

Should I measure success as a father by the strength of the bond during/after teen years? Sometimes I think I'm still in school, still going to classes and learning, but the times and schedule are invisible now, so I don't know when to take notes and when to just laugh at dumb mistakes.

Going through life with a gimp mask might stop us from making the dumb mistakes, but we can't appreciate (or understand) those mistakes without making them.
